Luke 23:26-31

True discipleship isn't about following your heart or protecting your peace - it's about taking up your cross and following Jesus through suffering. Simon of Cyrene was forced to carry Jesus' cross, but he carried it behind Jesus in the position of discipleship. Meanwhile, women followed Jesus weeping, but their compassion was misplaced - they needed repentance, not pity. Many people follow Jesus for how he makes them feel, treating church like a charging station rather than a training ground. But feelings make terrible foundations for faith. Jesus invites us to join him in suffering well, letting him lead us through our unwanted burdens rather than clinging to worldly promises of comfort.
